Most parents start their baby registry in the second trimester, around 20 weeks, once you know more about your baby and have time to research before any shower. Starting early gives you room to compare big-ticket gear and update the list as you go.

Why the second trimester

By around 20 weeks you are usually past the early uncertainty, you may know the sex if you are finding out, and you have a comfortable runway before a baby shower, which is often held in the third trimester. It is early enough to plan thoughtfully, but late enough that it all feels real.

Tips for timing it right

  • Add the big items early. Strollers, car seats, and cribs take the most research and the most help to cover, often through group gifting.
  • Look for a completion offer. Many registries let you buy whatever is left after your shower at a discount, so you can finish the essentials yourself.
  • Keep it updated. As you learn what you want, swap items in and out. Your registry is not set in stone.
  • Do not stress about finishing first. You do not need every item before baby arrives. Focus on the day-one essentials: a safe place to sleep, a car seat, diapers, and a way to feed.
