The Babyletto and Namesake cribs and gliders in our table below list GREENGUARD Gold, and so do UPPAbaby's Remi playard and Ciro V2 high chair. The label tells you a finished product's predicted chemical emissions passed UL Solutions' strict limits; it is not a safety rating, and crib structure is set by CPSC rules. Gold caps total VOCs at 220 µg/m³ and formaldehyde at 7.3 ppb, against 500 µg/m³ and 50 ppb for standard GREENGUARD.

The GREENGUARD Gold badge shows up on crib, glider, dresser and mattress pages from Babyletto, Namesake and UPPAbaby. It is a real third-party certification run by UL Solutions, not a logo a brand can print for itself. Here is what it measures, what it leaves out, and how to read the claim on a product page.
What GREENGUARD Gold measures
GREENGUARD Gold is a chemical emissions certification. UL Solutions tests products in environmental chambers and sets maximum allowable predicted indoor concentrations for the chemicals they give off. VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are carbon-based chemicals that turn into vapor at room temperature. Paints, adhesives, foam and finishes give them off, and they are part of the smell of new furniture.
UL says GREENGUARD Gold limits emissions of more than 360 individual VOCs plus total chemical emissions, and that Gold products must also meet the California Department of Public Health standard method for VOC emissions testing, known as California Section 01350. UL describes Gold as the tier for products used in nurseries, schools, healthcare facilities and homes with children. UL also says certified products are subject to a review of the manufacturing process and routine testing.
GREENGUARD Gold vs standard GREENGUARD
| Limit (maximum predicted concentration) | GREENGUARD Certified | GREENGUARD Gold | How much tighter Gold is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total VOCs | 500 µg/m³ | 220 µg/m³ | About 2.3 times lower |
| Formaldehyde | 61.3 µg/m³ (50 ppb) | 9 µg/m³ (7.3 ppb) | About 6.8 times lower |
| Total aldehydes | 100 ppb | 43 ppb | About 2.3 times lower |
| Individual VOCs | 1/10 of the workplace threshold limit value | 1/100 of the workplace threshold limit value, plus California Section 01350 limits | 10 times lower before the California limits |

A Gold certificate is pass or fail. It confirms a product came in under the limits, but it does not tell you how far under.
What the claim says on products we sell
We read our own listings to see where the badge appears and what exactly it covers. It is not only on furniture, and on one stroller it covers the fabrics rather than the whole product. For how the Babyletto cribs differ beyond the label, see Why Buy Babyletto.
| Product | Category | SugarBabies price | What the listing says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Babyletto Pogo 8-in-1 crib | Crib | From $699 | GREENGUARD Gold certified. Also states its finish is lead and phthalate safe and that it exceeds ASTM and CPSC safety standards |
| Babyletto Rolli 9-in-1 crib | Crib | From $599 | GREENGUARD Gold certified |
| Babyletto Palma 8-in-1 crib | Crib | $749 | GREENGUARD Gold certified |
| Babyletto Palma 4-in-1 crib | Crib | From $599 | GREENGUARD Gold certified for indoor air quality |
| Babyletto Moab 3-in-1 crib | Crib | $999 | GREENGUARD Gold certified |

| UPPAbaby Remi playard | Playard and bassinet | $299.99 | GREENGUARD Gold certification |
| UPPAbaby Ciro V2 high chair | High chair | $199.99 | GREENGUARD Gold certified |

Prices update automatically from our store. Claims are quoted from the manufacturers' descriptions on our product pages. Our listings for Babyletto and Namesake products say they were tested for over 10,000 chemical emissions and VOCs. UL's own GREENGUARD page now says certified products are screened for more than 15,000 VOCs.
Two things we noticed. First, of the four crib mattresses in our crib mattress collection today, one listing states GREENGUARD Gold certification and three do not mention it. A listing that does not mention it may simply not say, so check UL's database or ask the maker before treating that as a no. Second, read the wording. "Certified fabrics" on a stroller is a narrower claim than a certified crib, because the frame, foam and wheels are not part of it.
How to check that a certificate is current
UL publishes certified products in its SPOT database, which you can search by brand and model on UL's website. If a product page shows the badge and SPOT does not show an active listing for that model, ask the manufacturer before you buy.
When GREENGUARD Gold is not the answer
GREENGUARD Gold is not for judging structure, fire performance or durability. It answers one question, chemical emissions into the air, and leaves these to other standards:
- Crib structure. Slat spacing, mattress support and hardware for full-size cribs are covered by the CPSC's federal crib standard (16 CFR 1219). The CPSC's guidance is no more than 2 3/8 inches between slats (CPSC crib safety tips). Every crib sold in the US must meet the federal standard, certified or not.
- Flammability. Flammability standards such as California TB117-2013 and foam certifications such as CertiPUR-US are separate claims from GREENGUARD, and some of our listings, like the Namesake Crewe's, state them.
- Durability and finish wear. Whether hardware holds through conversions or a finish chips on a teething toddler is not part of the test.
- Safe sleep. A certified crib or mattress still needs safe sleep practice: the CPSC advises a firm, flat surface with a fitted sheet only.
GREENGUARD Gold is also voluntary. No federal law requires a crib or glider to carry it.
GREENGUARD Gold FAQ
Is GREENGUARD Gold the same as GREENGUARD?
No. Standard GREENGUARD allows up to 500 µg/m³ total VOCs and 50 ppb formaldehyde. GREENGUARD Gold cuts those to 220 µg/m³ and 7.3 ppb, and adds California Section 01350 requirements. UL describes Gold as the tier for nurseries, schools and healthcare settings.
Do all cribs need to be GREENGUARD Gold certified?
No. It is a voluntary certification. Every full-size crib sold in the US must meet the CPSC's federal crib standard (16 CFR 1219), but emissions certification is optional.
How do I check if a crib is still GREENGUARD Gold certified?
Search UL's SPOT database by brand and model. If a product page shows the badge but SPOT has no active listing for that model, ask the manufacturer before you buy.
Does GREENGUARD Gold apply to crib mattresses?
It can. UL lists mattresses among the product groups it certifies, and the test covers the finished product. Not every mattress is certified, so check the listing and UL's database for the exact model.
Is GREENGUARD Gold the same as CertiPUR-US?
No. GREENGUARD Gold is UL Solutions' emissions certification for a finished product; CertiPUR-US certifies foam. The Crewe glider's listing states both.
Is GREENGUARD Gold certification required by law?
No. It is a voluntary third-party program run by UL Solutions.
