Choose a nursery glider by its motion (a smooth glide is the nursery favorite), whether it swivels and reclines, supportive arms for feeding, durable easy-clean fabric, and above all the fit for your body. If you can, sit and glide before you buy.

Pick your motion

A glider moves smoothly back and forth and is the most popular nursery choice. A rocker uses a curved base for a classic feel but takes up more floor space. A reclining glider lets you lean back for long feeds, and a power recline does it hands-free while you hold the baby.

Features that matter

  • Swivel: a 360-degree swivel lets you turn to a side table or dresser without standing.
  • Lockable glide: a glider that locks in place protects curious little fingers from the gliding mechanism.
  • Quiet, smooth motion: quiet bearings keep the chair from waking a sleeping baby; look for a solid warranty.
  • Supportive arms: wide, padded arms support your feeding arm and a nursing pillow.
  • Performance fabric: stain-resistant, easy-clean upholstery handles the spills ahead, and removable covers are a plus.
  • Footrest or ottoman: a built-in pop-up footrest saves floor space; a separate ottoman can double as a seat.

Get the fit right for your body

Comfort is personal, so the best test is to sit and glide. If you are shorter or petite, make sure your feet reach the floor when you are seated back, and that the seat is not so deep that the backrest leaves you unsupported, a lumbar pillow or a shallower-seat model can help. If you are taller, look for a tall back for head and neck support and a deeper seat so your knees are not cramped.
