A correctly installed car seat does not move more than 1 inch side to side or front to back when you test it at the belt path, the point where the seat belt or lower anchors hold it down. NHTSA found about 46% of car seats are misused, so it is well worth checking your install, or having a certified technician check it.

Your quick install checklist

  • The inch test: Grip the seat at the belt path and tug. It should not move more than 1 inch side to side or front to back.
  • The pinch test: With the harness buckled, try to pinch the strap at your child's shoulder. If you can pinch any slack, tighten it.
  • Chest clip: Position it centered on the chest, level with your child's armpits.
  • Recline: For a rear-facing infant, set the angle using the seat's built-in recline indicator so the head cannot fall forward.
  • Top tether: Always attach the top tether for a forward-facing seat.

The most common mistakes

According to NHTSA, the most frequent errors are a loose installation (more than 1 inch of movement at the belt path), the wrong recline angle, a loose harness, a chest clip out of position, and a forward-facing seat installed without its top tether.
